● Fit: Standard vs Custom
● Material
● Weave density
● Draw strings or velcro to cinch around the kettle
● Straps for hanging the bag
Fit
You basically have two options: standard or custom. A standard bag can accommodate a variety of water bottles, some of which are
better suited than others. Custom bags, on the other hand, are made to your specifications.
Standard bags are certainly cheaper, but custom bags can be made to suit unique needs. For example, if you want to directly fire the
kettle for step mashing, you can buy a shorter bag to keep it from touching the bottom of the kettle.
Remember, a bag that fits properly can save you money on fake bottoms or screens.
Material
As far as I know, most bags are nylon, polyester or plastic. Like what you get for what you pay for, thicker and more durable fabrics
last longer and cost more. As with double stitching, there are differences in weaving.
Drawstring/Velcro
You will need to hold the bag in place while mashing. You can do this with clips, Good Fit, Velcro, or drawstrings. Straps can also
serve the same purpose by being attached to jug handles.
Strap
The shoulder straps are perfect for hanging the bag on a pulley system, a ladder, or even holding the bag in your arms.
I don't recommend using the arms unless you're trying to combine the brew with strength training.
To collect all the wort, you will need to allow the bag to drain for at least 10-15 minutes. Protect your back and find a way to hang
your bag.
Save time in real time
The first time your whole grain brewing mashtun cleanup involves lifting and dumping the bag, you'll wonder why you didn't buy one
sooner. I think we can all agree that shoveling grain out of a mashton is one of the worst parts of brew day.
Nothing makes me happier than saving time and energy while brewing. Trust me, it's worth spending $10 to $35 to avoid this step.
Bagmakers are found in almost all brewing equipment, including coolers.
Whether you're a traditional whole grain brewer or a BIAB enthusiast, I'll give you what you need to know.
